This coffee comes from:Grown in the highlands of North Kivu, this coffee from Virunga Coffee Company is part of an effort to rebuild the DRC’s coffee industry through quality, farmer development, and sustainable agriculture. The region’s high elevations, volcanic soils, abundant rainfall, and equatorial climate create exceptional conditions for specialty Arabica coffee.
Founded in 2011, Virunga works directly with smallholder farmers, providing agricultural training, coffee seedlings, processing infrastructure, and support throughout the harvest cycle. Seven washing stations across Kivu allow farmers access to improved processing and quality control, helping produce coffees that can command higher premiums. This natural processed coffee in particular comes out of the Kahondo washing station.
Virunga’s coffees are primarily Bourbon and Blue Mountain varieties, grown at elevations of roughly 1,500–1,900 meters. The stations produce fully washed, honey, and natural coffees, with careful drying on raised beds. Alongside coffee quality, Virunga invests in organic certification, tree planting, improved working conditions, women’s participation, and community development.
