Dumerso washing station is located near the town of Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia. It’s about 388 km from the capital Addis Ababa. Many small farms from the surrounding area contribute to their locally owned, family-run mill. The washing station is run and owned by Hirut Berhanu.
In Dumerso, coffee is the primary industry. More than 90% of the people in the region are involved in coffee business. Coffee is the dominant source of income for the majority of smallholder farmers in the region. To these growers, coffee is everything; coffee sends their children to school, coffee buys medication, and provides the livelihoods for families.
Currently, there are two washing stations in Dumerso: one is run by cooperatives; the other belongs to Hirut Berhanu where our coffee is processed. During the harvest season (October-January) Hirut employs 290+ workers, 95% of whom are women.
Hirut Berhanu has been involved in the coffee trade for the last 15 years. She worked in the Ethiopian commodity exchange as a coffee trader. In 2010, she purchased the Dumerso washing station from the government. The mill was originally established in 1998, but it was not operational at the time of acquisition. In 2013, Hirut re-opened the mill and began processing specialty coffee. You can find more information in the links below.
Everything processing method and form of coffee produced by the birhanu sisters is worth tasting if you like the yirgacheffe profile (high acidity/brightness and floral) this one in particular is sweet and balanced. I did not find any quakers or roast defects in the roast. The cupping notes are spot on. This coffee makes a fantastic cold brew or nitro cold brew for a summer day. It also makes a great light roast espresso pulled with a higher ratio and long preinfusion at six bars. Lastly did a pour over with an orea which my wife could drink black (she prefers milk in her coffee). This coffee is expertly roasted, from a great origin and producer. If you like the washed Ethiopian flavor profile this coffee delivers that and more. If you don’t know if you like this profile and you like sweet coffee then give this one a try.
Doesn’t ship as fast as Amazon, but that’s because it’s roasted after you order it. If you’re a serious coffee drinker, YIELD is an excellent source.
I bought this for my husband since I don't do caffeine (I bought the decaf, which I also love). Needless to say, he's been really enjoying his morning coffee lately! It was also so nice to receive a handwritten card from your team. So thoughtful! :) Will definitely order again!
