This coffee came from: Martin Montero at Finca La Bastilla.
La Bastilla Coffee Estate is located in the northeast of Nicaragua, in the region of Jinotega. This area is incredibly fertile and the flora reaps the benefits of the tropical weather and volcanic soil. This allows the farm to cultivate many micro-farms with and produce up to 150 micro-lot coffees.
La Bastilla Coffee is a partner we are excited to work with, not only in bringing you an exciting new coffee, but we love their commitment to sustainability. Their business functions through the implementation of multiple initiatives on the farm; including efficient use of river water, a water treatment program that channels the methane gas bi-product to fuel the kitchen, and two education programs.
The first is a primary school, created to serve the children of the employees of the farm. Since its founding in 2003, they are now educating over 200 local students and employing 6 full-time teachers. The second is a technical school, where youth in this rural area have access to training in two areas; farming and tourism. Founded in 2007 the Fundación de Educación y Emprendedurismo Rural (FEER) has the capacity to see 60-75 students a year. They speak to the vision behind this program: “Our ambition is to provide a stepping stone platform to change the community.”
We are proud to share this story and coffee with you. As we continue to grow our offerings at YIELD we will continue our commitment to source coffees with stories worth telling. By partnering with us you are investing in farms like La Bastilla, where communities are being elevated and lives are changed through relational coffee.
